Ballantyne’s debut juvenile novel, The Young Fur Traders: Snowflakes and Sunbeams from the Far North drew directly from the author’s six years of real survival experience with the Hudson’s Bay Company in Canada. Following spirited young clerk Charley Kennedy and his companions across frozen lakes, dog-sled trails, and perilous river rapids, Ballantyne established the gold standard of arctic adventure fiction.
